Historical and Technical Notes on Aqueducts from Prehistoric to Medieval Times
2013
The aim of this paper is to present the evolution of aqueduct technologies through the millennia, from prehistoric to medieval times. These hydraulic works were used by several civilizations to collect water from springs and to transport it to settlements, sanctuaries and other targets. Several civilizations, in China and the Americas, developed water transport systems independently, and brought these to high levels of sophistication. For the Mediterranean civilizations, one of the salient characteristics of cultural development, since the Minoan Era (ca. 3200-1100 BC), is the architectural and hydraulic function of aqueducts used for the water supply in palaces and other settlements. The M…

Design/methodology/approach: A Brazilian, Chinese and Norwegian plant of a Norwegian electro-chemical company were studied from 2017 to 2019. Our data consist of the results of the plant’s assessment performance program, combined with interviews and observations at different organizational levels. Findings: The MNC had largely managed to adopt the X…

The cultural dimension of territorial intelligence, state of the art, case of cultural heritage
2009
International audience; A new field of research and experimentation is the cultural dimension of territorial intelligence, which means the analysis of the cultural conditions of a sustainable development. Theses conditions are at least cultural diversity and social cohesion. Some significant works have been done concerning the link between culture, territory and identity; cultural diversity is very often considered from the point of view of cultural industries, but it must refer firstly to different people living in the same territory. A very important question is how diversity can be taken into account in the field of heritage and cultural wealth. After his very important work about " plac…
A pragmatic high modernism? rural development and state building in the Ethiopian lowlands, c. 1960–2019.
2022
Large scale agricultural projects driven by a high modernist ideology have been closely interlinked with the process of state building at the Ethiopian lowland frontier since the second half of the twentieth century. This paper provides a diachronic analysis of the political economy of agricultural development and the associated frontier effect in the western and north-eastern lowlands of the country across three different political regimes. A comparative assessment of these patterns suggests that the high modernist paradigm should be applied with some qualification to the agenda of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), the coalition that ruled Ethiopia from 1994 to…
